AGING EYE CARE: HALOXYL

Haloxyl™ is a relatively new anti-aging ingredient, found in many of the most effective anti-aging skincare products available on the market today. Manufactured by SeDerma®, a company with headquarters in France, this ingredient has been proven to effectively reduce discoloration and dark circles under the eyes.

Our eyes, more specifically the skin around them, are often the first part of our bodies to show signs of aging. Dark under-eye circles affect men as well as women, and in many cases they, more than wrinkles or gray hair, are the first visible signs of aging, making us look years older than we really are.

The skin around our eyes is thin and delicate. With age, it becomes even thinner and more translucent, due to the loss of collagen. This area is full of tiny blood vessels and thinning skin makes them more noticeable, resulting in discoloration. Because the skin so thin, it is very easy to break the blood vessels directly beneath it. Blood leakage means that (like any bruise) hemoglobin is released and loses oxygen, resulting in discoloration. Leaks prompt the body to release enzymes to break down red blood cells and hemoglobin and broken down hemoglobin leaves a dark color that shows through the thin skin in the eye area. Unlike bruises in other parts of the body, blood vessels and capillaries under the eye often continue leaking, and the discoloration rarely disappears on its own.

In addition to the increased thinness of skin under the eyes that comes with age, older people are more liable to be on medication. Medicines that dilate blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow, may contribute to the creation of dark circles under the eyes. Other probable causes of dark under-eye circles are sun damage, which weakens the delicate skin, medical conditions such as heart or liver disease that can cause fluid retention and the swelling / dilation of blood vessels, allergies that cause us to rub itchy eyes and genetics. In some cases, habitual facial expressions may result in skin that is darker under one eye.

Earlier topical eye treatments contained mostly Vitamin E and caffeine, whose diuretic effect was supposed to reduce ‘bags’ under the eyes, but anti-aging eye cream and eye serum formulas today contain new ingredients designed to help maintain the youthful appearance of healthy skin in the eye area, such as Haloxyl™.

Touted as a new cutting-edge anti-aging product, Haloxyl™ is not sold as a product on its own. According to the manufacturing company, SeDerma®, it is a synthetic ingredient that loosens the pigmented blood particles resulting from burst capillaries under the skin in the eye area, thus effectively reducing discoloration and dark circles. This ingredient, which is actually a peptide (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7), also increases lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness around the eyes. SeDerma states that Haloxyl™ has been clinically tested with excellent results (19% to 45% improvement of dark under-eye circles and puffiness among study volunteers).

It contains an antioxidant peptide known as Chrysin, derived from the passion flower, which stimulates the enzyme that clears out bilrubin (one of the two color degradation elements in hemaglobin) as well as hydroxysuccinimide, which dissolves the second color degradation element, iron, so that it can be eliminated.

Anti-aging eye products that use Haloxyl™ at the right concentration are apparently effective against under-eye discoloration, flushing out pigmented blood with each application and stimulating blood flow in the area around the eyes. Although there is no indication that Haloxyl™ alone can effectively reduce the visible signs of eye aging, since this requires compensating for lost collagen, it has been effectively used in a variety of eye creams and serums that contain ingredients such as Real Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid, (among others) to reduce the signs of eye-aging. Two examples of Haloxyl-based eye treatments that are currently popular are Elite Serum™ and Hydrolyze® Under Eye Treatment.

If you suffer from chronic under-eye discoloration and puffiness that are adding years to your age, you have nothing lose by trying out these products – before resorting to laser surgery, dermabrasion, or dermal fillers, for example.
